The other dog, a male Husky, was roaming inside\u00a0the\u00a0house,\u00a0also filled with dog waste and debris.\u00a0Neither\u00a0one had access to food or water.\u00a0A utility worker\u00a0had\u00a0arrived to disconnect utilities and\u00a0when he saw the dogs,\u00a0notified the police. A hero for the dogs!<\/p>\n<p>Officers immediately removed\u00a0the neglected dogs\u00a0from the environment and placed them in the\u00a0Bay Village\u00a0kennel.\u00a0The animal control officer\u00a0transported the dogs\u00a0to Avon Lake Animal Clinic. It was determined they were\u00a0both young, un-neutered males and malnourished. Vaccine history was unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Several trips to the clinic and overnight vet care would occur throughout the multiple month process.\u00a0The dogs were slowly hydrated,\u00a0under the supervision of veterinarians from Avon Lake Animal Clinic.\u00a0Special diets, including homemade bland diets,\u00a0were prepared and delivered by the Friends of the Bay Village Kennel. They also paid\u00a0a\u00a0mobile pet groomer to bathe both dogs since they\u00a0were not current on vaccines.\u00a0Medication, toys, treats and bedding were also routinely provided.<\/p>\n<p>The Bay Village police officers visited four times\u00a0a day,\u00a0seven days a week in\u00a0conjunction with Bay&#8217;s part-time\u00a0animal control officer to feed, medicate, clean and entertain the dogs, now known as Apollo and Baker, for a total of 96 days.\u00a0The officers on all shifts supervised their safety and the process in order for the dogs to\u00a0safely gain weight and\u00a0continue\u00a0their ongoing medical care.<\/p>\n<p>The Bay Village kennel is not set\u00a0up\u00a0for\u00a0long-term\u00a0engagements. At\u00a0times,\u00a0it was crowded when other strays were\u00a0brought in. Due to certain\u00a0legal issues\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0charges being\u00a0brought against the\u00a0owner\u00a0of Apollo and Baker they needed to be housed\u00a0at the Bay Village kennel.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 60 days into the process a family from\u00a0Parma presented\u00a0very detailed documents stating that the dog known as Baker\u00a0had at one time been in their possession.\u00a0This family\u00a0was allowed\u00a0regular visitation with\u00a0Baker\u00a0until he\u00a0was released to them after 73 days in the kennel.<\/p>\n<p>The previous owner\u00a0was\u00a0charged with two counts of animal cruelty under Goddard\u2019s Law, Ohio Revised Code\u00a0959.131.<\/p>\n<p>The kennel fund was drained from the expenses. &#8220;Bow Wow Bingo,&#8221; a fundraiser\u00a0sponsored by The Bay Village Women\u2019s Club\u00a0Foundation and emceed by\u00a0FOX 8 personality Beth McLeod, has been postponed due\u00a0to the COVID-19 virus.\u00a0It will be rescheduled at a future date.<\/p>\n<p>In the interim,\u00a0if you would like to donate to support rebuilding the city kennel\u00a0fund, please make a monetary donation payable to The City of Bay Village and earmark it for budget line 284\/kennel fund, attention Renee Mahoney, Finance Director.
